All about Kim

I was born in London SW19 and was raised in a rather print focussed family. My mother worked with one of the earliest computers and my father made intaglio plates for banknotes. Two cousins ran a litho printing company in Southend so there was always the inevitable teatime talk about it all.

My father's first trade was metalworking and blacksmithing, so he did this in his spare time for extra money. Mum designed and made neckties for Carnaby Street so that we could have holiday money. All in all a very creative household!

It was inevitable that I would go to art college; Dad was less than thrilled about the idea as he was keen that I become a scientist. My parents did the uni rounds with me and I settled in at Surrey UCA (then Epsom School of Art).

I worked for two years in Shepherds Bush producing page layouts for travel magazines and engineering journals before getting married and having a daughter and a son. My daughter is an interior designer and my son is a scientist, so I hope my Dad feels that he got his wish!

When my nippers started school I went back to university in the evenings to get the hang of the Apple Macintosh and the new creative software that became the future of design world-wide. Quite a few very talented designers got left behind in those days which was a terrible shame. I worked on some wonderful contracts: picture editor for a premier league magazine, two years for a company that designed and built cruise ships and luxury yachts and regular contracts for large consultancies like Publicis and PWC.

Wild Associates were the last consultancy that I worked for before founding my own company. They were marvellous and I left them on very good terms. We still get together on LinkedIn and talk design and family! My work there involved charitable and christian publications, children's books and work for BUPA.

I can't really imagine the day that I won't be doing this any more so will probably be laid to rest with a layout pad and a crayon. Talking ideas is my favourite thing. So much that I am an industry mentor volunteer at Tolworth Girls' School in Surrey, where these poor sixth formers listen patiently to my opinions. I'm sure they teach me more than I teach them.
